Going out ??

Just a little thing we have heard about recently here at Now What.....

Has anyone ever had the issue of going out to a pub and wearing a hat or cap (because you are going through treatment) and not being allowed in! Some people we know have had this happen a bit recently and despite having a card from their doctor or hospital, they have still been refused entry!!

If anyone else has had this issue - or something like it - then let us know!

Just cause you have cancer doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to go to the pub!!!

That sounds really bizarre. Does the venue have a policy on wearing headgear indoors? That would be pretty discriminatory by itself, but if it's just targeted at people who look like they've lost their hair from treatment, I can't imagine what the logic is.

Its total discrimination. I have seen it a number of times with friends that are going through treatment. I mean they are young people-why should they not be allowed to go in wearing whatever they want! We tend to go to pubs over clubs because we have found certain ones have nicer rules and more understanding security guards! Plus the live music is WAY better!

The only logic I can think of for niteclubs would be that if someone is wearing a hat it might be hard to see their face on security footage. But if someone has a note or card from their doctor or cultural reasons then surely an exception should be made.

There was a case in Canberra last year where a man who was wearing turban type headwear, for cultural and religious reasons, was refused entry into a club. I think he ended up taking the niteclub to court for discrimination and winning. I'm not sure if someone going through treatment would also have grounds for discrimination...any lawyers in the house?

This sort of thing makes me angry.  I have a friend who uses a wheelchair and she was once asked to leave a clothing store because they were worried about her chair damaging the clothing.

I would love to hear a lawyers comments too.
