Stress management techniques (aka tiger taming techniques)

Been reading a great book 'Fighting Invisible Tigers: Stress Management for Teens' by Earl Hipp. The book talks about working out your own stress management (or tiger taming) techniques.

Thought it would b great if ppl could share their favourite stress management techniques on the forum.

So....what do YOU do to tame your tigers??

Well, chocolate works for me but probably not the healthiest solution so I have recently signed up to a regular excercise program.  That way I can get healthy, socialise and manage my stress at the same time.

It's true what they say about retail therapy as well - it is fun, but not if you realise the next day that you've spent more than you can afford, or racked up a nasty credit card bill.  If I'm in the mood for some retail therapy but can't really afford it I like to set myself a challenge, ie how much fun stuff can I buy for $10 and hit the cheap outlets.  It's even better if you can do it with a friend, and set yourself a theme, and then have fun playing with all your bargain purchases afterwards!

Music does it for me. It's the perfect thing coz it can either help you change your mood (e.g. relax you when you're stressed) or really let you get fully into a mood. Like when you're already in a good mood and then you listen to one of your favourite songs and it takes your mood to an even higher level!

Yep, music is definitely a winner (hence my avatar).  I like to sing along at home and in the car and especially in the shower!  I don't care that I can't really sing either!

Art and craft is good too.  Once when I was going through a really stressful time, I started making mosaics.  I found it really helpful to unleash my anger and stress by smashing up old tiles (with safety glasses on of course!), and then found piecing it all back together again in creative ways was actually really calming.

(Not surprisingly) I like playing tennis when I am stressed as it makes me think of other things and the exercise is great for relaxing and helping me sleep.  I would always recommend exercise, especially if you can do it with a friend/s or a team as social interaction is good too! ............I also like watching continual episodes of Gossip Girl Season 3 with a family sized cherry ripe........but that is another story :)

I like to listen to music because i find that the right Trac can (pardon the pun) get your brain on 'the right track'.
I am also very big on reading. If you find a good book that is really in depth you can get absorbed in it and it kind of takes you away from everything.
Also the exercise thing is a good idea cause it builds endorphins, so it makes you feel good! There are fun exercises to dont forget - beach, rollerblading, ice-skating, team sport... DO IT! haha
I find stupid movies with friends also helps... something really rediculous likkkkeeee.... dodgeball or baseketball or legally blonde... you completely forget any stress :)

After having self care and stress management techniques almost preeched at me, i am finally (after about three years!) starting to apply them to my life.
Going for a jog after i've had a really hard day just helps me to clear my mind and when i come back i have forgotten about what made me angry or stressed and i can be productive with the rest of my night (mostly its assignments!)
The other thing i also do is take a shower, it just kind of 'washes everything away' and you feel less stressed. For girls, i recently found a really nice warming facial mask that i put on for 10 - 15 mins and go and read a book while i wait. it is a little self care thing and its relaxing and fun!, it makes me feel beautiful again as well! :) also i did it at a girls night recently and that was really fun!
my other stress free tip is breakfast! i never used to eat it but boy oh boy i am a breakfast pig now! i think it gets me ready for the day and gets my brain going so a glass of juice, cereal, maybe soem yoghurt or toast, and on days when there is time a yummy egg makes me feel so happy and perfect about the day!
    NO MORE STRESS!!!!

Because I live close to the beach I find a walk or a swim is a great stress relief. I study full time from home so when I need a break from sitting at my desk I head to the beach for a break. I always feel refreshed after a swim in the waves.

I also agree with earlier suggestions of a good book to read, funny movies, being creative - even if your just making something for yourself, warm baths and little things like facemasks to make you feel and look nice!

One thing I find helpful is to write everything that is buzzing around in my head down on a peice of paper so that all my thoughts are clearly set out in front of me.. then I find it easier to try and work out solutions. I usually throw out my writing afterwards, I find it helps because otherwise my thoughts remain a mess in my head and the problems are still not solved..

Stress is not an easy thing to deal with and I think it just takes practise and determination to keep trying to get rid of it!
