Gifts for patients

I've been looking for some really creative ideas of what to take for a friend in hospital.  Something that can brighten their room, keep them occupied or even be a conversation piece.  Here are some ideas that I have tried so far:
- Balloons (can't take flowers into oncology)
- Magazines/books
- Photos
- Board games
- Toiletries
- Junk food!

Does anybody have any other suggestions?  Was there something that someone gave you that you just loved?  Or a cool idea you came up with for a friend or family member?  I'd love to hear your ideas!

My friend gave her doctor a vase of origami paper flowers that she made herself. Apparently the doctor loved it and it's sitting in her office...

i think that itunes vouchers or mobile phone credit is really good as well as sometimes you just want to be able to text and you might not have enough credit.

Ooh, I love the origami flowers idea.  I could take up some nice paper and make them with my friend.

Vouchers and credit is a great idea too.

Thanks for the suggestions - keep them coming!

It's a bit like the old school 'mix tape' idea -but I made a song list of all my friends favs to download on her ipod

I had a friend that we took an edible bouquet in... Junk food AND pretty colours. They're really cool and have a nice treat as well.

I also think collecting notes/ gossip pages from your friends is good. My mums friend went to all her friends and got everyone to write an update page to give to mum while she was in hospital so she knew what was going on (and got all the juicy goss) plus its better than facebook cause you get to keep it on the wall etc. and its a bit more personal :)

either that or a photoboard/photo album :) everyone loves photos and you can be creative about the photos to... take pics in random places or dress up stupidly and take photos in different places. its hilarious!

anyway thats all i have. Hope it helped.

Great ideas guys - keep 'em coming!

I like the idea of collecting messages and updates from friends and families and sticking them up - kind of like a facebook wall in 3D!

I've also been looking into blogging, because I thought it would be good for my friend to keep an account of her experience and maybe even post photos/videos, etc.  There are a few free blogging websites out there with customisable layouts etc and you can even 'lock' them so only people you give permission can view them.  Has anyone had any experience with this?  Do you think it could be 'therapeutic'?

Yeah my friend kept a blog while she was travelling and it was invite only to view it. Don't know about therapeutic... I guess it's a bit like a diary so maybe :)

Another idea for female patients might be getting a beautician or something to come to the hospital and the two of you get facials or mani/pedicures together. Or even a hairdresser if you can find one that will come to you.

I reckon being in hospital in a gown doesn't make you feel like the most attractive person in the world.

Thats a good point. Not only are you probably feeling crap, you have to look it 2. How about some cool pjs as a pressie? Or even (ok, so I am being girly) a throw for the bed?

Yeah I love a good pair of Pj's...a pampering kit would be good too...a hand picked selection of nail polishes, nail files, face mask satchets etc. Who doesn't love a good pampering session?!

i had some friends make a quilt for me when i was sick. each of them did a square each, and decorated it how they wanted, and they put together this amazing, beautiful quilt for me. it was a really beautiful gift, and made me feel so special to know that everyone went to all that effort.

also i think that just giving plush toys are great! something to cuddle, when ur in bed, or use as a pillow. you can never get tired of a soft fluffy toy :)
