Cancer types

Bone tumours - what are they?

Primary cancer in the bones is a fairly rare type of cancer. It mainly occurs in adolescents and young adults.

There are over 200 bones in our bodies. Bones have a number of important functions – including holding us up!

They also protect our vital organs and produce minerals and nutrients that we need.

Primary bone cancer

Primary cancer in the bones is a fairly rare type of cancer. It mainly occurs in adolescents and young adults. This is thought to be because of rapid bone growth during adolescence.

There are 3 main types of bone cancers:

  • Ewing’s sarcoma
  • Chondrosarcoma
  • Osteosarcoma

There are some other, less common primary bone cancers:

  • Chordoma
  • Spindle cell sarcoma

The most common symptom of bone cancer is pain.

Other symptoms may vary depending on the location and size of the cancer.

The main treatment for bone cancer is surgery, however depending on the type of bone cancer, treatment may include chemotherapy or radiation
