Emotional issues

Having cancer brings up a whole truckload of emotional issues. Undergoing treatment can mean that these issues are faced in really difficult circumstances.
  • People living with cancer may experience poor self-esteem, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression and difficulties adjusting to life as it used to be.
  • Such challenges may be more profound for cancer patients who have physical disabilities or scars caused by cancer and this may influence their quality of life.

Each person is different. People experience a mix of emotional reactions and some may be positive e.g. you might feel good about personal relationships that have deepened or discover strengths within yourself that you didn’t know you had.

On the other hand, some emotional reactions can be uncomfortable or confusing. People sometimes feel overwhelmed by conflicting feelings.

Many cancer survivors say that managing their emotions can be just as difficult as dealing with medical issues.
