What is Medicare?
- All Australian (except Norfolk Island) citizens, New Zealand citizens and people with permanent visas are able to get a Medicare card.
- With a Medicare card, you can receive free treatment in public hospitals and free or subsidised treatment (where the government pays for some of it) by certain doctors.
- Medicare does not usually cover dental costs, but people living with cancer may also be able to apply for help with some dental services under the Medicare Chronic Disease Dental Scheme or the Medicare Teen Dental Plan (ask your doctor about this).
