What is Medicare?

Medicare is the publicly-funded health-care system run by the Australian government.
  • All Australian (except Norfolk Island) citizens, New Zealand citizens and people with permanent visas are able to get a Medicare card.
  • With a Medicare card, you can receive free treatment in public hospitals and free or subsidised treatment (where the government pays for some of it) by certain doctors.
