Cancer types

When your sibling is diagnosed

When you first find out that your brother or sister has cancer, you may be overwhelmed and feel really shocked.

There are a couple of really important things to remember:

  • Cancer can be treated.
  • Over 250,000 people are living with cancer in Australia.
  • It is not your fault.
  • Having the right information is really important.
  • Hang on to hope.

You may feel numb, angry and confused by your sibling’s diagnosis.

When your sibling was diagnosed with cancer, they would have been told the name of the cancer.

Cancer types generally have long-winded and hard to understand names. Each type of cancer is very different, which means that its treatment is different.

Your brother or sister will probably be referred to an oncologist or a haematologist and they will work out a treatment plan for them.

There are some cancers that are more common in young people than in adults. Check out our 'what cancers do young people get' fact sheet.
