Mum had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
Mum had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma for 15 years - the first two years were undiagnosed. Therefore, she was sick for a total of 17 years.
Mum fought a very strong battle including going on trial drugs that are hopefully helping people now.
When mum was dying she had to go to a palliative care unit. Palliative care helped mum and our family in so many ways to cope with what was happening. They do amazing and commendable work.
Whilst mum knew she was sick, she didn’t want to die. She wasn’t ready to give up and right up until her last moments with us, she wanted to make sure we did something for the palliative care unit she was in when she was well enough.
Mum passed away in a palliative care unit. In her legacy I ran a fundraising day for 'comfort items.' It was a great event, because mum was into motorbikes, so we were able to get around 60 bikers turning up (even though it was in May - very cold time in Tassie) and many public and friends/family also came along to the fun day.
We raised around $1400 on the day and are still collecting money from people who have heard about the event. I plan to run this event every year in memory of mum. I hope my story gives you some inspiration that something good can come out of something sad.
